‍Extending Career Insights for Multilingual Mentoring using a Bilingual Power BI Dashboard‍

Challenge

Multilingual Mentoring collects learner survey data to understand attitudes towards multilingualism, International Languages and learners' future aspirations. 

As new survey questions were introduced, the existing Welsh Learners Power BI dashboard needed to be extended to present additional findings around careers, skills and future opportunities. 

The challenge was to introduce new visualisations while retaining the established dashboard experience and branding. 

The solution also needed to be accessible in both English and Welsh, with interactive functionality that allowed users to explore responses across different years and learner groups.

Solution  

With project funding from Cardiff University's Future Generations Fund, Butterfly Data extended the existing Power BI dashboard with additional survey data and interactive visualisations covering learners' post-GCSE pathways, university aspirations, careers advice, future career intentions, skills developed through different languages and perceptions of future career opportunities. 

New pages were introduced alongside enhancements to existing dashboard content, with filters enabling users to explore the data by year and gender. The solution was delivered in both English and Welsh, with translated labels, responses and supporting data logic implemented to maintain consistency and usability across both versions. 

Visualisations were refined iteratively to ensure that each presented the survey findings clearly and appropriately. 

Impact  

The enhanced dashboard provided Multilingual Mentoring a more comprehensive and accessible way to explore learner perspectives on language learning, education and future careers. 

Interactive visualisations allowed users to examine responses across years and learner groups, while comparative views helped users explore the skills learners associate with International Languages, Welsh and English. 

The additional career focused content provided further context around learners' aspirations and perceptions of the relationship between language learning and future opportunities. 

Providing the dashboard in both English and Welsh supports accessibility and enables findings to be communicated consistently to different audiences.
