Luke Westlake
September 2024 Hire
Introduction
Hello, I’m Luke, and I joined Butterfly Data as a Data Consultant in September 2024. I’m excited to share my journey and accomplishments during my first six months here.
Starting My Role
As a Data Consultant, I was responsible for creating a dashboard using Power BI and using SAS to perform data quality assessment on client data. From day one, I focused on improving my coding skills especially in SAS.
How easy was it to settle in/fit into company culture?
From day one it has been easy to settle in, and I have felt like a valued member of the team. There are dedicated events and social time which make it easy to get to know everyone and help ease you in.
Key Achievements
In my first three months, I’ve been fortunate to work on a variety of projects which have helped me upskill in areas that interest me. Here are some highlights:
Power BI dashboard: The first project I completed was in collaboration with Cardiff University where I worked as part of a team to create two dashboards for the client analysing school data and the uptake of MFL across Wales. One of these aimed to replicate PowerPoints that they present within schools, the other was used to give them insight into the data they collected. The client was happy with the outcome and presented our work to the Welsh Government.
Creating my own tool for a client: I have customised a tool for a client allowing them to explore data using a UI instead of writing code.
Desk booking spreadsheet: Internally we use a spreadsheet to track the use of the offices. I have taken over the maintenance of the Manchester office spreadsheet. As part of this I have added improvements to automate some of the steps and I have added visualisations so that we can get valuable insights from this data.
Challenges and Solutions
Transitioning into a new role came with its challenges, such as learning new systems including Power BI and balancing multiple projects at once. To address these, I sought help from my colleagues with more experience than me. I also utilised my mentor to set goals that align with the projects I am a part of.
Learning and Development
These first three months have been a period of significant learning and growth. I’ve developed skills in SAS and Power BI. Key lessons include problem solving to be able to effectively get insights from data. I have also gone from a beginner at Power BI to being able to confidently manipulate data, create visualisations and support my colleagues using it for the first time.
Looking Ahead
As I move forward, I am excited about using my knowledge and skills to add value to any project I am a part of. My goals include improving my skills in SAS by completing the training courses in my dedicated personal development time and becoming more confident at presenting my ideas to a large group. I am committed to offering my support to members of the team wherever I think my skills will have an advantage.
Advice for New Joiners
Reflecting on my experience, I would advise new hires to take advantage of the Mentor system and have a learning mindset. My journey has reinforced the importance of seeking guidance from those with more experience. By doing this you will increase your knowledge and accelerate your personal growth.
Conclusion
My first three months at Butterfly Data have been incredibly rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and look forward to continuing to contribute to our team’s success. Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey.
